The 10ft by 12ft base is pegged out after careful consideration was given
to the best location of the observatory. An old mainly dead hedge had
been pulled up and replaced by 4ft high fencing a few weeks before, and
the small group of conifers (on the right) have yet to be moved to a new
location.

|
As the garden slopes southwards it was necessary to build up certain
areas of the foundation and lower others. |

Martin helps to level the ground after a 3ft deep 'ball shaped' hole had been dug for
the telescope pier.

The start of construction. |
The floor sills (consisting of 4"x2" pressure treated timber, screwed together) were
initially assembled on the patio and then manhandled down to the final
location. Each joist was placed at 2ft intervals. This ensured that the
floor would be solid with little or no bounce when walked upon.

|
|
Eight 6ft concrete posts formed the foundation of the observatory. Leveling
was then carefully carried out, checked and rechecked, to ensure that the
slope of the garden was fully neutralized.
